My name is Libby McCalden and I live in beautiful Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I have been an artsy person for as long as I can remember. This, in addition to a love of graphic design and planning kids’ birthday parties has lead me to my current position as a designer of unique, printable kids’ party invitations and accessories. 

I create each invitation theme myself from start to finish. From the invitation I then go on to create a party package which includes everything from thank you cards to birthday banners and water bottle wrappers to birthday hats. I love the opportunity to print and assemble my creations myself but they are all available in digital format as well. It gives me great satisfaction to see the finished product.

I would love to tell you that I do all this creating in a beautiful, well organized studio but the truth is I do most of my designing in the afternoons sitting in my messy living room overlooking the majestic Ottawa River. The seasons change quite significantly up here so I go from staring out over a frozen sheet of ice to the grey clouds of a summer storm rolling down the river to a the sail boats gliding up stream on a breezy late spring day. I love living in the country and smile to myself every day that I get to work from the comfort of my home.

The biggest inspiration in my life and work is my family. They began inspiring me the second they each came into my life and changed it forever. They continue to inspire me every day with their love, smiles, happiness and support.

My life as a designer came to me gradually. It was not planned nor do I know where it is going but I can tell you I love every second of it. Last year I found a quote that I go back to often when feeling discouraged…”The work you do while you procrastinate is probably the work you should be doing for the rest of your life.” –Jessica Hische.

I come from a family of accomplished artistic women who have encouraged an enthusiasm and flair for art and design and I was always happiest when I had a pencil and paper to hand. I started designing jewellery when I was very young and as I grew my interest in design and fashion took me down new and interesting avenues. At school I studied Art and textiles and then went on to college to get my A Levels in fine art, textiles, graphics and photography. It was only in the last few years that my passion for jewellery design was reignited and I started creating handmade jewellery pieces steadily again.

I have always loved fashion and the way one can express themselves and their character and personal style through what they wear. I am particularly drawn to jewellery because it adds that personal touch to an outfit that brings it together and can change what you are wearing from day wear to evening wear. You can take a simple black dress and make it pop just by adding a statement necklace. I believe a person’s choice in jewellery reveals something about that person. Those special jewellery pieces can stay with you while the every changing high street fashion races on at a pace.

I love creating bespoke pieces for people that are individual, unique and precious to them. I know how annoying it is when you have an idea of the type of jewellery you would like to compliment that special outfit but you can’t find it anywhere. Knowing that I can create that piece for someone to add the sparkle they have been looking for makes me happy.

I love working with wire, chain but most of all I enjoy working with gemstones because of there beautiful natural tones, and shapes that are unique in every stone. Gorgeous autumnal browns and oranges are my favourite hues to work with, but admittedly I’m a bit of a magpie and also love the bling and razzle, dazzle of faceted quartz and Swarovski crystals.

My personal style and taste in jewellery leans to boho, tribal jewellery or modern abstract silver pieces. My creative process is very hands on, so I’m normally inspired to make something because I’ve found some beautiful beads that I want to make a focal feature in my design.

Unlike my daily life which is neat, clean and well managed I tend to create artistically in organized chaos! I have slowly encroached upon my husband’s office space and started to turn it into my own studio. I think I have managed to convince him that turning the office into my own “beading room” is a good idea because it would get rid of all my beads, bits and bobs from our living area.

I started making jewelry about two years ago. I'm mostly self taught, but I now take an occasional class when I can learn a new technique. My products are all centered around beads.

 I picked Moonlight Shimmer for my Etsy shop name because at the time I was mostly making really sparkly jewelry. Over time I've branched out more and found that some of my best selling items now are chunky stone necklaces and beaded wire crochet bracelets.

My workspace is mobile, and I end up beading wherever feels right that night. My photo is of me at the dining room table.

Sometimes I bead in front of my computer, or the TV, or at craft night at my local bead supply store. I store all of my supplies in tackle boxes. That makes them easy to pick up and move to a different room. I've also found that tackle boxes are usually cheaper than specialized crafting containers.

I'm Jackie of EveryPrettyThing, and I make a ton of things! I started out with nursery art canvases with decoupaged animals, and then expanded into decoupaged jewelry boxes of all shapes and sizes, and then expanded into pillows inspired by my canvases.

 I've recently added a dark-stained men's jewelry box (for cuff links and watches and such) that I absolutely love! I work in my half of the home office. It was getting a little cramped until I got a big table for craft fairs...we set it up to see how big it was, and it magically became my new crafting table! This may have irked the husband a little, but I think it's lovely! Now I have lots of room to spread out. The threat of "If it gets messy, it'll have to go!" is the best motivation for staying organized...I don't want to lose my big table!

 I make very sure that I clean up every little scrap of paper every night (a task I used to be terrible about putting off until I was buried!). I find that if I clean my workspace every day, it doesn't get unmanageable. I know that seems like a no-brainer, but I'm a lazy thing and don't like to do that, so it was a big breakthrough for me!

I've been a very creative person since day one. I guess it's inherited, both my mother and my grandmother did oil painting and all kinds of crafts. I still have fond memories of quietly watching my mom paint for hours when I was five or six.

I learned how to make handmade bows when I worked at a local craft store, and when I lost my job, and was unable to find another one, I decided to use my creative talents and the knowledge that I had learned to start my own shop.

My goal with the bows and related items that I sell, is to make them appealing to all ages and walks of life. Bows aren't just ultra feminine, or stuff from grandma's attic. I try to use materials and techniques that make anyone of any age fall in love with them.

The only advice I can think to give others is "Use what you have!". I started out with practically no money to spare on materials for my shop, so I bought clearance items, I used materials that I already had stored up around my house (I'm a collector), and it's amazing the uses you can find for everyday items.

Small Shiny Objects is a shop full of ever-changing beaded gifts and jewelry. Like the shop name suggests, "small shiny objects" have always been a weakness of mine, so if it sparkles, I'm adding it in there somehow - be it natural gemstones, fancy glass, crystal, or other fascinating piece to work into the mix. My favorite things to make as of late are the beaded vases and fishbowls - I make the top ring elastic, to make the covers easily removable (and the glass washable), but use nymo thread for the rest of the netting, to keep it fluid.

The same goes into making Christmas ornaments during the holidays (they take awhile and I sold out quickly last year, so I'm actually working on some already for next winter).

For those just starting out on Etsy, I'd say this - good photos are SO important! I can't even stress how much better my shop began to look (and how much more it was being noticed) after investing in a decent digital camera and a photo box to get those items pictured "just right".

 If you can't swing the dough for a photo box, though, try natural (but not glaring) daylight to get the truest colors in your pics. Really, it does a world of good. And last but not least, don't get so wrapped up in the selling end of your craft if it starts to take away from the joy of the crafting itself. I've made that mistake more than once, only to realize that beading is nothing if not fun - and if I'm having fun, well then - that's always something. ( :

Vintage Whale is a collaboration of two college students, Kristine and Lily. We're both from Oklahoma but go to colleges in different states. We’ve been creating and crafting for Etsy for about a month now and really enjoy it! Our shop consists of both vintage and handmade items. Before we started Etsy we always had thrifting adventures and were always on the hunt for vintage goodies for ourselves.

 Soon we decided we would like to share our lovely finds with others. We’re both really inspired by vintage and re-used items and it’s evident in our shop. Most of our items are made of scrap fabric or buttons we find lying about. We enjoy taking old things and giving them new life as necklaces, headbands, bobby pins or even cards. We’re always thinking up new ideas for items we can make for our shop and don’t usually create more than a few different versions of any one item.

Our creative process is pretty fluid and flexible because we create whatever we feel like making at that particular moment. We don’t have a designated work space but usually have movie nights that double as craft days where we watch old movies and work on our shop. Usually our crafting supplies are kept neatly in boxes or storage drawers we can roll out into the living room so we can craft and watch movies.

Once we finish our creations we love to go outside and take pictures of them on pretty paper or old books. Nothing goes into our shop that we wouldn’t buy ourselves, and we really hope people find something they love as much as we loved making it.
